On my previous Trick Out An Aluminum Pull Cart for Fishing the Surf post, I received multiple questions on how I carry my tackle. Typically, I carry my tackle in a sling bag, but I’ve been doing some reorganizing for an upcoming trip, and I wanted to build some rigging onto the cart to carry the two UV-resistant Plano 3700 boxes I’m using.
This solution secures the boxes directly to the side of the cart, keeping them accessible while freeing up space.

Step 1: Cut A Length of Shock Cord
Cut a length of shock cord (around 48" gives you plenty to work with) and singe the ends with a butane torch to ensure they don’t unravel. [00:50]
Step 2: Attach the Wheel-side Cord
Using two overhand knots, attach the shock cord to the bottom of the rod holder tube closest to the wheel. Pull it tight to ensure the knots won't slip under tension. [01:10]
Step 3: Thread through the Shock Cord Eyelet
Pass the shock cord through your existing rigging eyelet, heading in the direction of the wheel. This allows you to create the "X" pattern needed to apply even pressure across the tackle box. [01:25]
Step 4: Attach the Front-side Cord
Attach the tag end of the cord with two overhand knots to the bottom of the front rod holder. Again, ensure there is significant tension in the line before finalizing the knots. [01:48]
Step 5: Place Shock Cord over the Rod Holders
To tighten up the rigging and create the storage slot, pass the shock cord over the tops of the rod holders. This pulls the "X" tight against the frame of the cart. [02:04]
Conclusion
To use the rigging, simply lift the shock cord and slide your 3700 box underneath. The tension keeps the boxes secure against the cart frame without interfering with the wheels. This setup allows you to carry two large, two-tier boxes—plenty of tackle for any day in the surf. [02:15]
