DIY: Mold A Simple PVC Sheath To Keep The Saltwater Off Your Bait Knife

DIY Custom PVC Knife Sheath
This project is a simple, effective way to create a custom, weather-resistant home for your bait knife. By heat-molding PVC, you get a "Kydex-style" fit that secures the blade perfectly, which is especially useful for resisting the corrosive saltwater environment of the surf.
Materials Needed
3/4” PVC Pipe: Any size works, as long as it is wide enough to accommodate your blade once flattened.
Heat Source: Toaster oven (preferred) or a heat gun.
Forming Tools: Heat-resistant gloves, thick foam or a yoga mat, and heavy weights (like pavers).
Finishing Tools: Bandsaw or jigsaw (optional).
Step 1: Cut a Length of PVC
Measure your knife blade and cut a section of PVC. Ensure the length is sufficient to cover the entire blade while leaving the handle clear for a quick draw.
Step 2: Heat the PVC
To form the plastic, it needs to be completely malleable.
Toaster Oven: Heat the PVC at 150°C until it becomes soft and floppy. This provides the most even heat for a clean mold.
Heat Gun: You can also use a heat gun, though it takes longer to ensure the pipe is heated through consistently without scorching the exterior.
Step 3: Form the Sheath
Once the PVC is soft, you must work quickly before it begins to harden.
Wearing heat-resistant gloves, remove the PVC and insert the knife into the center of the softened tube.
The Press: Place the PVC and knife sandwich between a thick foam material or a folded yoga mat.
Add Weight: Place heavy pavers or a flat board with weight on top to compress the foam. This forces the PVC to form a tight, custom seal around the dimensions of your specific knife.
Step 4: Finishing (Choose Your Style)
Depending on your end goal, you can finish the sheath in one of two ways:
Standalone Sheath (Step 4a): Hold the cooled sheath up to a bright light to see the blade's silhouette. Use a bandsaw or jigsaw to trim away the excess plastic into a traditional shape. You can then add pop rivets to the edges for extra security.
Integrated Cart Mount (Step 4b): If you are integrating this into a bait station (like a surf fishing cart), leave the excess flattened plastic. This "flange" acts as a built-in mounting bracket that can be easily drilled and bolted to your cart.
Wrapping Up
This custom-molded sheath is virtually indestructible and won't hold onto moisture or fish odors like leather or nylon. It’s the perfect weekend project to ensure your bait knife stays secure and rust-free through seasons of hard use.
