How to Snack Silently in the Tree Stand for All-Day Sits
With the rut coming up, a lot of us are preparing for those long, all-day sits in the tree stand. When you're out there for ten or twelve hours, you have to eat, but the loudest thing you can do is start crinkling plastic wrappers. I’ve put together a few simple tricks to help you stay fueled without alerting every deer in the county.
The Secret to Silent Packaging
The biggest noise-maker in the woods is factory packaging. Whether it’s a bag of jerky or a protein bar, that crinkling sound travels a long way in a quiet forest. To solve this, I use small Muslin Bags.
Before I head out, I take all my snacks out of their original wrappers and pre-package them into these cloth bags. Since I'm currently sticking to low-carb options, I usually pack:
Nuts
Bacon Jerky
Keto-friendly cookies (like Fat Snax)
The muslin is completely silent to open and close. As long as you aren’t eating something inherently crunchy like potato chips, you can snack all day without making a sound.
Mess-Free Hydration
Refilling a water bladder can be a headache, especially if you’re trying to keep the rest of your gear dry inside your pack. I use a Bladder Adapter that allows you to connect a standard water bottle directly to the bladder's drink tube.
You just slide the adapter onto the water valve, turn the bottle upside down, and let it drain right into the pack. It’s a clean, easy way to top off your water supply without having to pull the whole bladder out of your bag.
Coffee on the Rail
I'm a fan of cold coffee during my sits, and I found a great way to keep it accessible using some old gear. I repurposed a Tactical Baby Gear bottle pouch that has PAL strapping. It was originally meant for baby bottles, but it works perfectly for coffee. It straps right to the molle on my pack or the rail of the stand, keeping my drink within reach and secure.
Wrapping Up
These are just a couple of small adjustments that can make a big difference when you're trying to stay stealthy during the most important part of the season. Keeping your movements and your noise to a minimum is key to an all-day sit. Hope it helps y'all as you get out there during the rut!
