DIY Kydex Bow Hanger for a Tethrd HYS Strap
This DIY project was inspired after watching a video from G2 Outdoors on how to create a bow hanger out of Kydex. While the original concept is great, I wanted to document a clearer step-by-step process for others to follow. These hooks are perfect for use with a Tethrd HYS Strap or a homemade accessory strap.
Materials Needed
Kydex Strip Heater (or a heat gun)
3/4″ Plywood Block (for bending)
Step 1: Cut and Prep the Kydex
Measure a 1.5″ strip of Kydex. Use a straight edge and a carpet knife to score a deep line, then bend the Kydex until it snaps clean. [00:00:17] From this strip, cut a 5-inch section for the bow clip (save the remaining 7-inch piece for a matching quiver clip). [00:00:23]
Step 2: Shape the Tapered End
Use a rotary tool or sandpaper to taper one end of the 5-inch strip. This narrow, tapered edge is what will slide into the loops of your HYS strap, so ensure it is shaped to fit easily. [00:00:32]
Step 3: The First Bend
Mark a line about 2 inches from the tapered end. Center this mark over your strip heater. Once the Kydex becomes malleable and starts to sag, use your 3/4″ plywood block to form a crisp, 90-degree bend. Hold it in place until the plastic cools and hardens. [00:00:43]
Step 4: The Second Bend
Measure the distance needed to clear your specific quiver or bow attachment. Heat the Kydex again just past the first bend and fold the remaining section upward to create a "U" or "J" hook shape. [00:01:08]
Step 5: Smooth the Edges
Sanding is a crucial step! Use your Dremel or sandpaper to smooth all edges, especially the tapered end. If the edges are rough, the clip will snag on the webbing of your accessory strap. [00:01:24]
Step 6: Drill Attachment Holes
Using your quiver mount as a template, mark the holes on the flat section of the Kydex clip. Use a 3/16″ drill bit (standard for 10-24 bow screws). If you need a bit of adjustment room, you can slightly oversize the second hole. [00:01:40]
Step 7: Final Assembly
Mount the clip to your bow using the hardware from your TightSpot quiver (or other mounting bracket). Ensure the clip doesn't interfere with any moving parts of the bow. [00:01:55]
Conclusion
This Kydex holder is incredibly lightweight and can stay on your bow full-time. It provides a secure, quiet way to hang your gear exactly where you need it while saddle hunting. Hope this helps get you organized in the tree!
