DIY: Save Your Fish Bites and Fish Gum from Going Bad and Other Tips for Winterizing Your Surf Gear

Tip #1: Prevent Your Fish Bites and Fish Gum from Going Bad

Materials Needed

If you’ve ever used Fish Bites, you know that it has a tendency to go bad if its not protected from the elements. A trick I use to combat this is to store any unused Fish Bites in vacuum-sealed bags until I make another trip to the coast.

Simply, remove the Fish Bites from the package, place in a vacuum-bag, seal it and staple the original package to the outside.

Tip #2: Keep Your Bearings Blazing

Materials Needed

  • Ronson Lighter Fluid

Saltwater is hard on bearings. After every trip, I clean my reels throughly.

My favorite trick is to get rid of all the grim in the bearings by soaking them in lighter fluid.

Tip #3: Change Out Your Old Line

Materials Needed

Much-like bearings, saltwater and the sun can compromise your line quickly. After every trip, I remove all the weathered line on my reel and restock with fresh line for the next outing.

Tip: Save Money on Line
Rather than replacing your whole spool, I leave about a quarter of the old line on the reel as backing. Just use a double uni-knot to tie the new line to the old and you’ll save a bit on filling up your spools.
