This is Part III of a series on overhauling a Native Ultimate 14.5 for fishing with kids. In Part I, I covered cleaning up the oyster rash and rus while Part II focused on replacing the factory flush mount rod holders with heavy duty rocket launchers to troll.

Part III is going to focus on replacing a Scotty 241 base with a low profile YakAttack Mighty Mount Switch. The Switch uses the same hole pattern as the Scotty 241 so it requires not additional holes…great news for folks with 241s on their yak prior to there being better options.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Remove the Existing Mounting Screws

Using a screw driver, remove the existing screws holding the mount to the kayk.

Step 2: Remove the Anchors from the Kayak Hull

Surprisingly, this Scotty 241 was attached to the hull using shallow wall anchors (clearly not factory installed). I just backed these out leaving some fairly sizable holes I would need to address.

Step 3: Use the Switch To Trace and Cut Out A Backing Plate

To compensate for the loose-fitting holes, we can create a backing plate from a piece of cutting board. use the Switch as a template and then cut it out with a jig saw.

Step 4: Drill Holes in the Base Backing Plate

Place the backing plate on the YakAttack Might Mount Swith, drill a 1/4″ hole through the backing plate using the Mighty Mount Switch holes as guides. Be sure to drill straight down and after each hole, insert a bolt into the hole to prevent any misalignment due to shifting while drilling.

Step 5: Attach the YakAttack Might Mount Switch to the Hull

Once the base is drilled, place the Mighty Mount Switch on the hull and attach to the backing plate using the included stainless steel hardware.

Step 7: Add the YakAttack Boomstick Or VisiCarbon Pro

Attach the LockNLoad system for the YakAttack Boomstick or attach a VisiCarbon Pro.

Stay Tuned: Part IV – Replace the Rigging on the Kayak and Seats

In part IV, I’ll show you how I replaced the shock cord throughout the kayak that had lost its elasticity.
